Edward George Showers, ’29, from Kenmare, North Dakota, met Marjorie (Miller) Showers, ’31, from New Salem, North Dakota, while attending the University of North Dakota.
Marjorie was pursuing a career in education, graduating from the College of Education & Human Development, while Edward was pursuing a degree from the Nistler College of Business & Public Administration. While at UND, Edward was involved in the Reserve Officer Training Corps. After graduation, Edward coached and taught in various schools in northwestern North Dakota. He joined the American Red Cross during World War II, working the rest of his career as Assistant Director of Disaster Services throughout the United States.
Edward was a three-year letter winner for the UND Football Team in 1926-28. As a senior, he was named all North Central Conference First Team, the seventh all-conference player in team history at the time. The 1928 team was the first team inducted into the UND Athletics Hall of Fame and was also the first UND team to win a conference title.
Edward and Marjorie are survived by three children, five grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
In honor of Edward and Marjorie, Susan and Terrence Mulligan, daughter and son-in-law of Edward and Marjorie, established a $50,000 endowment to aid UND football student-athletes.
The scholarship or scholarships will support tuition and fees for UND football student-athletes. To sustain the Department of Athletics history of competition excellence and position UND as a premier educational provider, it must continue to attract the best and brightest student-athletes. As the cost of higher education continues to rise, UND Athletics is committed to supporting high-achieving student-athletes.
Each year a UND football player will be chosen as the recipient of this scholarship in memory of Edward and Marjorie. Like Susan and Terrence Mulligan, you can help a student-athlete in need and honor someone you love by establishing an endowment.
