Memorial Trees and Benches

The University of North Dakota welcomes gifts of trees to the university campus. Many people desire a living reminder of departed loved ones or coworkers who touched their lives.

Giving a memorial tree or bench

  • Gifts to memorial trees and benches can be made to the Campus Beautification fund 
  • Minimum $2,000 gift
  • Gifts support the general ongoing beautification of campus
  • Gifts to memorial trees:
    • Cover the cost of the tree, a plaque and care during the tree's first year of growth
    • Provide for replanting and replacement over time
  • Gifts to memorial benches:
    • Purchase a bench made from recycled composite material and steel
    • Include a plaque
  • Plaques are 11-by-17-inch stone depicting the UND seal

Dedication ceremonies may be held upon request.

The donor may request a specific area for a tree or bench location, which must conform with UND guidelines. Location and tree variety must be approved by Facilities Management.

Pancratz Tree

In August 2014, Linda Pancratz, along with her daughter, Elizabeth, dedicated a tree and bench to her late husband, Mark, in front of the Gorecki Alumni Center. 

Solberg Tree

The family of UND student Mark Solberg dedicated this tree to his memory near the Hughes Fine Arts Center. Mark, an avid music student, passed away in 2011.

Baker Tree

Adam Baker's family dedicated this tree, along with the Power of Positivity scholarship award, in his memory.
