Dr. Tao Yu Memorial Fund

Dr. Tao Yu served as Assistant Professor of Chemistry at the University of North Dakota from 2019-2021. On June 13, 2021, Tao Yu passed away unexpectedly. While at UND, he inspired students and faculty within the Chemistry department and is remembered for his kindheartedness and generosity.

A memorial fund has been established by Tao Yu’s colleagues and family in his honor. Allocations from this fund will go toward priority needs of the Chemistry department, including scholarships, faculty support, research, travel and equipment.

Tao Yu was born and raised in China. Upon graduating from Fudan University, he continued pursuing a Ph.D. degree at the University of Minnesota. Before joining UND, he was a postdoctoral research associate at Northwestern University and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and an assistant professor at Tennessee Tech University.

Tao Yu was an inspirational figure on UND’s campus and acted as a big brother to students. An eager scholar, he was well connected with research networks in the state.

“Tao’s life was short, but the time he stayed in this world was wonderful,” said Julia Zhao, professor of Chemistry. “His smiling face, his kindness and generosity, and his collaborative spirit will be remembered by all his friends and colleagues.”
